BBB_Landgren-pressThinking innovatively but simultaneously upholding tradition is something that permeates everything undertaken by the Bohuslän Big Band under the leadership of artistic director Nils Landgren. This is reflected in the uniqueness of music and arrangements in every production. If you take a look at the Bohuslän Big Band’s repertoire you find timeless music and fantastic musicians such as Duke Ellington, Frank Zappa, Avishai Cohen, James Brown, Lew Soloff, Kenny Wheeler, Ale Möller, Bengt-Arne Wallin, Gil Evans, Bob Mintzer, Steely Dan, Lars Jansson, Maria Schneider, Cole Porter, Lars Gullin, George Gershwin… Yes, the list can go on for as long as you like.

The band also includes some of Sweden’s leading arrangers for big bands, seven of the band’s members regularly write fresh, new arrangements especially for the Bohuslän Big Band. Moreover, there are also a number of personal soloists…

The Bohuslän Big Band dates back to the early 1800s when the Bohus Battalion was one of Sweden’s many military bands. From the mid-1950s the band developed into one of Sweden’s two fully professional big bands. Every year the band tours in Sweden and internationally, giving about 100 concerts to some 30,000 spectators. In 2001 the band was the first Swedish big band to tour in Japan and China and subsequently returned to Japan in 2003 and 2008. In addition to this the band has toured in England, Scotland, Denmark, Germany and Egypt, and performed at the House of Sweden and the Kennedy Center in Washington DC in the USA. The band has played at festivals including the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, Jazz Baltica Salzau and the Stockholm Jazz Festival…

So, what does the future hold for the Bohuslän Big Band? Well, continuing the task of disseminating live music of the very top quality. Discovering exciting encounters and collaborations with musicians, composers and arrangers inside and outside our genre. Preserving and developing our genre and quite simply giving the listener an overall experience with the best that a big band has to offer…

The man with the red trombone needs no further introduction, he has been one of the world’s hottest artists for many years now. A totally open approach to music has given Nils Landgren the opportunity to play together with artists including Thad Jones, The Crusaders, ABBA, Eddie Harris and not least his own band Funk Unit. Now together with a dynamic, supertight and swinging Bohuslän Big Band we have a unique combination…

Uptil now the Bohuslän Big Band has released 15 discs under its own name, the last four of which were on Vara Concert Hall’s own record label. ”Swallow Songs” with the legendary American bass player and composer Steve Swallow, ”Letter to Billie” with the vocalist Jaqee, ”Porgy & Bess” with the trumpeter Lew Soloff and now the most recent, ”Good time Christmas” with Nils Landgren, Rigmor Gustafsson and others…

Children & young people
Every year the Bohuslän Big Band gives about 30 performances for children & young people in schools and concert venues throughout the Region Västra Götaland. Children and young people are tremendously important to us and we are keen to invite them to not only listen but also take an active part in our concerts, both singing and playing…
